| CURRENT MEADOW ACTIVITY Click on blue Links for expanded information Bald Eagle flew low over my meadow this morning, just before 9AM DST, flying N-S and following a local creek that eventually empties out into Lake Erie. The mature adult Eagle was just barely in front of a Low Pressure System and its advancing storm front of rain, high winds from the NW and thunderstorms. I saw a similar (or the same) Bald Eagle flying the same path 6 days previously. 1 resident pair Red-tailed hawks refurbishing their nest from last year .. fresh evergreen pieces seen stuck in sides of the nest. As of March 19, female hawk is sitting low in nest. By end of April, the female hawk appears to be feeding nestlings but I have not seen them yet Eastern Bluebirds are inspecting nestboxes on my Bluebird Trail. 1 pair checking out the boxes but not nest building yet. The return of the Tree Swallows gave the Bluebirds some competition for the nestboxes and the Tree Swallows seem to have won out. 8 Whitetail Deer grazing in a dip between 2 workland hills. I am thinking the snowmelt and rain runoff over the years has produced a huge mineral lick for the wildlife there. 1st Killdeer of the season seen in a working cropland field, alongside a fenceline. My cropland tennants have planted 40 acres of Clover on April 30 At a ponds complex up the road, I have seen Common Snipes, Greater Yellowlegs, Lesser Yellowlegs, Spotted Sandpipers 1 female American Kestral observed in late January. She actually entered my front yard birdfeeding area to take a close-up look of a coconut shell I use as a birdseed feeder that the squirrels had knocked to the ground. As of March 25, her mate has joined her. Eastern Meadowlarks have returned. But I have not seen any Bobolinks yet. First lawnmowing of the season last week in April. I have closely mowed the area around the Bluebird Trail for better insect hunting. |
